Packing & Firemen

packingmessAll I’ve done recently is pack, pack, pack. We’re closing on the house Tuesday at 3pm, and moving that weekend. It’ll be nice to have a few days between the closing and moving to thoroughly clean the house. I want to scrub the walls, clean the carpets, and wash the floors and bathroom.  The house is a clean house overall, but obviously I want to give it a good scrub down before we move in.

Recently the apartment building has been annoying me more and more and I’m counting down the days until we are out of here! Friday I was woken up at 4:45 by a strange beeping, and I wasn’t sure where it was coming from. Come to find out it was the smoke detector on the first floor. They are hardwired and it was the only one going off and google told us it was probably just the battery so I wasn’t to concerned. However, after over an hour of hearing it I couldn’t handle it anymore and called the landlord, after a half hour of not hearing back from him I started to over think it.

The smoke detector is also a carbon monoxide detector, and that light was flashing on it, and I started telling myself if it was just the battery both lights would be flashing. I ended up calling the dispatch non-emergency line, and told them specifically there was no fire but the detector on the first floor wouldn’t turn off. They sent a whole fire truck, and a few firemen in there outfits WITH AN AXE!! And guess what, it was the battery. Yup. Cause that situation wasn’t embarrassing at all….macaroons

Today I made macaroons, I wanted a break from packing, and I had some coconut I wanted to use up before the move. They taste amazing! I’m pretty sure I should have cooked the mixture on the stove for longer because it was a bit to wet, but they still turned out fine. If you would like to make them I used this recipe from, she seriously had the best recipes, I make things from her site all the time!

I guess its time I get back to packing and getting rid of things I don’t need, I can’t wait until Tuesday!

Hi all, welcome to my little corner of the internet! My fiance and I are currently 9 days away from closing on our first home and I’m going to want a place to show all of our little projects so I’ve started a blog!

housefrontWhen we started looking for homes I specifically said that I did not want to look at ranch style homes. I’ve always disliked them, homes with stairs just feel better to me. One of the listings our fabulous realtor sent us happened to be a ranch, and we decided to see it anyway and of course I fell in love with it. We ended up looking at another home after, cause I couldn’t buy a ranch! Needless to say, we went for a second veiwing and ended up putting in an offer and it was accepted! We looked at 8 houses total, which was quite a bit less then expected, I assumed our house hunt would take months!

Soon we’ll be closing on the home, and a few days later moving in. The home is far from updated, so we’ll have many many projects ahead of us in the coming years! I say years, because we’re going to have a mortgage now, these projects can not all be done at once! First on the list is the lovely second bedroom. firstprojectThe wallpaper is just the most lovely wallpaper I have ever see, and by lovely I mean ugly! I’m sure that it was fantastic when it first went up, but its just painful on the eyes now! I have vacation at the end of the month and my project is taking down that wallpaper (its even on the baseboard heaters and closet doors!) and ripping out the rug to reveal the hardwood floors hiding underneath. I’m really hoping the hardwood floors are in good shape, and that whoever lived in that room never spilt a bottle of nail polish remover on the rug…not that I ever did that or anything.

Another project I’d like to take on at some point is painting the kitchen cabinets  they are a pretty dark brown right now and I’d like something lighter, but I dont know if I want to go white so I’ve been trying to find inspiration online. Grey might be a good choice, but I’m afraid it’ll be to boring. I have lots of time to think about it though, its not an urgent need.

Now I’m off to google the best way to remove tack strips from a hardwood floor!
